A Tale of Time / Ibrahim Mahama

Guimarães, Portugal
WHAT HAVE WE DONE

The site-specific artistic intervention proposed by the artist Ibrahim Mahama, in the scope of Contextile 2022, integrated two components of public art - one indoors and the other outdoors.

In the interior space, his work had as its stage the covered square of the Guimarães Institute of Design. For this place, the artist thought up a sculpture-installation of large looms, supported by the industrial memory of the architectural space that develops as a structure within the macrostructure of the factory nave.

The looms, which the visitors were able to use, manufacture a fabric resulting from the miscegenation of textiles and the combination of cultures, conferred by the use of bases woven of yarns from Tamale, where the artist is from, and Guimarães, where the piece was installed.

Ideias Emergentes made the exhibition project, having accompanied the entire production process of the work from conception to execution.

After the Biennial, the piece was transported to the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art, led by Ibrahim, transforming itself from an aesthetic object to a utilitarian one, in a continuous process of democratization of art and integration of its global transactional flows.
