Peninsulares. Ways of Seeing
29 june – 2 august, Guimarães
15 october – 15 november, Pontevedra
PENINSULARES, Iberian Contemporary Textile Art Encounters, has as its main objective the promotion of contemporary textile art in Spain and Portugal, two shared cultural spaces in which textiles have always been, and continue to be, extremely important, not only in economic, social, heritage and artistic terms. In this fifth edition, Peninsulares will be held in Guimarães and Pontevedra, thus uniting northern Portugal and Galicia, two neighbouring territories.
Ways of Seeing
aims to draw attention to our relationship with nature, a nature that the human species has become accustomed to seeing as something external and alien, when in reality it is part of it. Humans are nature, but industrial and post-digital human society has lost its connection with the planet and with the other species that inhabit it, with which it maintains a purely extractive and/or voyeuristic relationship, always from outside an imaginary boundary, but no less real and lethal for that. The result of this ‘estrangement’ between the human species and the other species with whom we share the Earth is that, for a long time, we have entered into a mode of ignoring the environments and natural systems on which we depend, with consequences such as the climate crisis, the loss of biodiversity and the disregard for ancestral knowledge linked to the respectful and symbiotic management of natural resources.
Art is particularly well positioned to drive a transition to more sustainable practices, as it can collaborate with science and transform its data and figures into messages that touch people's emotions and transform them, reshaping the relationships between the planet and its human and non-human inhabitants.
The participating artists approach this theme from their own personal perspective. They innovate with traditional natural resources, create new materials from biodegradation and waste, and imagine a new poetics that blurs the boundaries between the natural and the artificial... This is where art becomes necessary and where this exhibition is situated.
